Common microorganisms found in public water systems 

Serratia marcescens - Gastrointestinal illness, urinary or bloodstream infections.

​•Morganella morganii - Diarrhea and infections in immunocompromised people.​

Staphylococcus spp. (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus) – Food poisoning like symptoms if ingested; may lead to skin, throat, or systemic infections.​

Candida albicans (fungus) - May disrupt gut microbiota and cause oral or gastrointestinal infections.​

Escherichia coli (E. coli) - Indicates fecal contamination; can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting.​•Pseudomonas aeruginosa - Opportunistic pathogen; may cause stomach upset and infections in immunocompromised individuals.​

Legionella spp. - Causes flu-like illness or Legionnaires’ disease, mainly through inhalation of aerosols.​

Enterococcus spp. - Linked to diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloodstream or urinary
